Tainan (台南), where is located in southern Taiwan, is famous for temples and, especially, delicious food. When you tell your Taiwanese friends that you went to Taiwan, you will receive jealousy looks. In January 2017, I had a food adventure in Tainan with my mom. The food we ate were majority in the West Central District (中西區). without further ado, let’s begin!

The first thing I ate was 魚麵, which in English means noodles made of a fish.

This old shop has over 50 years of history, their noodles is the must try street food dish. The noodle has a smooth taste, and it has no fishy smell! There are chopped meat, cabbage, seaweed, celery, and pepper for enhancement. With the vegetables in the dishes, you may feel like you are in the sea swimming with the fish! Yes! It’s this fresh!

The second must eat food is called hollow cake (香椪餅). This has been a snack for Taiwanese started in the old days. It has delicate sweetness, and it doesn’t take like cake at all. When you bite it, you can feel the crunchiness of the crust. Just be careful don't eat too much because you will never be tired of eating this tasty snack!

The third must try food in Tainan is 小卷米粉.

My favorite part of this dish is the neritic rice noodle soup. Although it is clear, every taste is full of seafood sweetness and freshness. There are around 5 big size neritic in a ball. I feel like the essential of the neritic is all combined with the soup together. Very very tasty!! The neritic and the rice noodle are very chewy. The noodle is not too soft or hard, but it absorbs the soup, making every single bite full of the sweetness smell. This is the dish that I truly will recommend to anyone at any time!
The forth must try food is xiao long bao (小籠包).

The skin is thin and the meat inside is not greasy. When you bite, the soup will explode (so be careful!) There are 8 xiao long bao. It may seem like a lot for a person, however I can finish all. It is not oily that I cannot finish all of them. Personally, I think it is similar to 鼎泰豐’s xiao long bao but a bit smaller. If you are looking for one bite girl size xiao long bao, this is a good option for you!

The fifth must try food is the matcha mochi red bean barley(白玉紅豆薏仁). If you know me, I am a Matcha lover! Not only does their mochi homemade, but they will also grind their matcha powder.

It is known as a "must go" shop in Tainan if you come to 國華街. the barley and red bean in the wooden bowl and matcha mochi in the smaller wooden bowl... don't the color attract you already? When you eat, I prefer to taste the barley first then add in the matcha and mochi. The red bean and barley are soft, and the homemade mochi are super chewy but won’t stick on your teeth. If you are a matcha lover like me, I truly recommend you to try it out!!
The sixth one, which is also for a matcha lover, is the matcha mochi red bean. The bean itself tastes sweet but the overall dish is not too sweet. Since they pursue healthy eating, they did not add too much sugar. When you add the matcha into it, the bitterness and the sweetness even out amazingly. With the chewy matcha flavour mochi inside, you will fly. Literally!

The seventh must try food is Steamed Taro Cake, a very popular Taiwanese traditional food. It is made of the rice flour, taro, and minced pork sauce. The reason why I put this in my favorite is that not only is this cheap, but it smells and tastes very delectable. The consistency for the rice flour and water batter is perfect. I would say they really pay a lot of attention on the ratio of rice to water because it affects a lot on the density and texture of the cake. This is a must try tradition food!

The eighth must try food is mochi! I picked strawberry for the flavour because it is winter, meaning it is the season of the strawberry! It has the right proportion of the red bean, mochi, and strawberry. You won’t feel like you are eating mainly mochi or red bean. The sweetness of the red bean with the sourness and juiciness of the strawberry really brings up the overall flavour of this snack. There are different flavours as well, such as mango in summer. I would say that it is a must try snack if you love mochi!

These are my favorite top 8 snacks in Tainan 國華街. I hope you give them a try and tell me what you think. If you have any questions, please comment below!
